Abstract/Notes | The companies are forced to collaborate with business partners to stay competitive. Moreover, customers are more demanding and seeking products with more variety, lower cost, and supreme quality, which lead to higher level of uncertainty. Hence, flexibility is needed and should be pursued by members of the supply chain in a collaborative way. Flexibility is the ability to cope with uncertainty originating either from internal or external of an organization. However, supply chain flexibility is costly and flexibility dimensions are not equally important for every supply chain. Therefore, a supply chain should carefully assess how much flexibility they really need because increasing flexibility does not always bring about greater economic income and an effective flexibility measure can make a business more responsive. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right degree of supply chain flexibility. This research aims to develop a conceptual framework to obtain a better understanding of supply chain flexibility and develop relationships between supply chain flexibility drivers and strategies to increase flexibility. In addition, we conducted a case study research to gain insight about flexibility in practice. To better understand the relationships between affecting factors and supply chain flexibility, mathematical and simulation models have also been developed. The models provide us with an understanding about the impacts of different flexibility strategies bring to a supply chain. Three main propositions are suggested from this research. First, companies tend to use reactive rather than proactive strategies. Second, companies seem to be more inward than outward-looking when there is a need for higher flexibility. Last, the power structure and typology of uncertainty in the supply chain will govern the type and configuration of supply chain flexibility. There are three conclusions that can be drawn from this research. First, while it is often neglected in earlier publication on supply chain flexibility, we demonstrated that transportation is very critical in achieving supply chain flexibility. Second, in the absence of collaboration, supply chain entity with low bargaining power has to bear higher level of uncertainty. Last, flexibility should cross the boundary of a single company and hence collaborations among supply chain players are important. |
